Time Is Our Most Valuable Resource
The sooner we realize that time is finite, the sooner we can begin to live a life of true fulfillment. This past weekend, I attended the funeral of a 12-year-old boy who lost his battle with cancer. It was an incredibly difficult service, especially since I’ve known the family my entire life. As I sat there, my heart went out to them, and I couldn’t help but reflect on the unimaginable grief they must be feeling. As I left the funeral home, I couldn’t shake the thought that the only thing that truly matters in life is the time we have left with the people we love. Time is our most precious resource, and if you speak to anyone older than you, they’ll often express the same regret: a wish to have more time, to turn back the clock, to relive moments they can never get back.
On Thursday, I was at CVS returning something I had bought by mistake when a local buddy of mine—an incredible runner—walked in behind me to grab something at the same register. I glanced at him and immediately sensed something wasn’t right. True to form, I asked if he was okay, and without warning, he teared up and told me that his father had just passed away in a tragic accident at home. In that instant, we both started crying. The only thing I could do was embrace him, trying to offer whatever comfort I could. As we walked out together, he said to me, “Call your dad.” I got in my car, overwhelmed with emotion. I’m incredibly close to both of my parents, and the thought of losing them—or the pain he was going through—hit me like a tidal wave.
Time isn’t just about the moments we share with others, though I believe relationships are the cornerstone of a meaningful life. Time is also running out on your own dreams, goals, and aspirations. Don’t let time slip through your fingers—don’t let it be the reason you don’t achieve something that truly matters. The hard truth is, the sun will rise tomorrow no matter what happens in your life, so it’s vital to understand how precious and irreplaceable time is. Hug your loved ones, tell them you love them, and pursue your dreams with everything you’ve got.
